Masoor Dal Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup split red masoor lentils
- 2 cups water + more as needed
- 1 teaspoon red chili flakes or red chili powder
- ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon salt or to taste
- 1 small onion finely chopped into crescents for the tadka or tempered (optional)
- 4 tablespoons canola, sunflower, or vegetable oil (optional)
Instruction
- Wash the lentils until the water runs clear.
- Place the lentils, spices, and water in a medium saucepan and bring to a rapid boil.
- Reduce the heat and let the daal simmer.
- When the lentils have absorbed the water (after about 10 minutes), stir the Daal Masoor with a wooden spoon and press down to achieve the desired consistency.
- Add 1-2 cups of hot water (depending on how thin or thick you want your daal), stir to mix, and simmer for another 5-10 minutes (again, depending on desired consistency).
- For the tadka, heat 4 tablespoons of oil in a skillet. Add the chopped onion and sauté over medium heat until golden.
- Place the Masoor Ki Dal in a serving bowl and pour the oil over the tadka.
