Masoor Ki Daal (Red Lentils)

Masoor Dal Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup split red masoor lentils
  • 2 cups water + more as needed
  • 1 teaspoon red chili flakes or red chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt or to taste
  • 1 small onion finely chopped into crescents for the tadka or tempered (optional)
  • 4 tablespoons canola, sunflower, or vegetable oil (optional)

Instruction

  1. Wash the lentils until the water runs clear.
  2. Place the lentils, spices, and water in a medium saucepan and bring to a rapid boil.
  3. Reduce the heat and let the daal simmer.
  4. When the lentils have absorbed the water (after about 10 minutes), stir the Daal Masoor with a wooden spoon and press down to achieve the desired consistency.
  5. Add 1-2 cups of hot water (depending on how thin or thick you want your daal), stir to mix, and simmer for another 5-10 minutes (again, depending on desired consistency).
  6. For the tadka, heat 4 tablespoons of oil in a skillet. Add the chopped onion and sauté over medium heat until golden.
  7. Place the Masoor Ki Dal in a serving bowl and pour the oil over the tadka.
